Johnstone was born on Aug. 9, 1934. He earned a B.A. from Concordia Theological Seminary, and both his M.A. and Ph. D. from the University of Michigan in Sociology. On Aug. 31, 1969, Johnstone was hired as an instructor at CMU. He served as a member of the CMU faculty, 1969-1992, and served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, 1987-1992.
